Meet Erin, our featured Wish Ambassador of May. An inspirational local teen, who wants to help make a difference in her community by sharing her wish journey.
“I think wishes are important because it lets kids forget about what’s going on in their lives.”
Erin was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was 14-years-old.
“It came out of nowhere,” said Erin. “I was playing golf one morning and noticed a lump on my neck so we went to get it checked out. Doctors later diagnosed me with lymphoma.”
In the months that followed, Erin endured countless treatments, infusions, doctors visits, and surgery.
“I lost all of my hair pretty quickly,” said Erin. “I fizzled out of school and moved my classes online.”
When Erin learned she qualified for a wish, she knew right away she wanted to travel to Australia. A dream fueled by her desire to cuddle koalas.
“I got to cuddle koalas and they were so cute! I even got see a baby koala and I really wanted to take one home,” she joked.
“The trip was amazing, I will just forever remember the sights, the people, and the experiences. Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, it actually felt like I was in Finding
Erin’s wish experience in Australia transformed her life.
“You get this once in a lifetime experience and you come home happy and you come home feeling better than you have in a long time,” said Erin.
“You’re not thinking about treatment, you’re not thinking about doctors appointments, you’re just thinking about this trip of a lifetime. And leading up to your wish, it’s what gets you through treatments, it’s what gets you through the appointments, and then you come home and you’re just on this sugar high of happiness and joy. Nothing is the same.”
Erin is now 16 and thriving.
“So, the bummer about my kind of cancer is that I don’t get to use the word remission, but I’m clear of all signs of Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to treatment.”
