“Wow! Wicked cool,” said 15-year-old Will when asked to recall the moment he saw his wish come true. From the new TV and reclining chairs, to the popcorn machine and sports memorabilia, Will’s “Kid Kave” was everything he wanted and more. “I couldn’t take it all in at once.”
Will has osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. At first he thought the pain in his leg was the result of an injury from running in the half-marathon or the Hood to Coast Relay Race. What he discovered was far more serious – a tumor just below his left knee. It’s a discovery that would put this avid runner on the sidelines, making his wish that much more meaningful.
His mom said that the “Kid Kave” gives Will and his friends a place to hang out, be comfortable and just be kids. Some of his favorite things include the Xbox, pinball machine and dart board. Details like the new floor from Macadam Floor and Design and the custom Boston Red Sox and Seattle Seahawks artwork on the wall provide the finishing touches for this Red Sox and Seahawks fan. “There’s nothing generic about the room,” said his mom. Will also loves the fact that he can eat as much junk food as he wants when he’s in his “Kid Kave.”
More importantly, this wish marks a turning point for Will. After nine months of chemotherapy and surgery, doctors consider him cancer-free. “Things are going well,” said his mom. “This [wish] is just a victory celebration for us.”
