When Caitlin was a young girl, her mother took her to see The Nutcracker Ballet. At the ripe old age of four, Caitlin fell in love for the first time.
From that moment on, she knew what she wanted to be in life and started dance classes that same year. When she became sick, she was no longer able to do the one thing she is most passionate about. So when Make-A-Wish® entered her life, her mother asked her if she was well and able do anything in the entire world, what would she want to do. Without any hesitation, Caitlin knew her true wish was to dance with a principal dancer and be able to perform a beautiful duet.
Little did Caitlin know that her wish would be transformed into a trip all the way to the Big Apple to dance at Joffrey Ballet School. Her ballet instructor, Alexandre, formatted the class to have the same rhythm and normality as his usual classes. He explained, “The truth of it all is, with dance – as hard as it is – one can dance with their eyes and one can dance with their legs, but she dances with her spirit.”
A smile did not leave Caitlin’s face her entire time in NYC and her dream to dance with a male principal dancer was fulfilled. This wish gave her the courage to stay strong in her fight against medulloblastoma and the hope that her future will be filled with the one thing she has loved since four years old: ballet.
“The Make-A-Wish Foundation has helped our family to heal; it is responsible for the giant smile that is on my daughter’s face and the courage for her to continue on,” Caitlin’s mother, Janice, says as she fights back tears. “To me, it means everything to see her dancing and to see her fulfill a wish and a dream that she wanted all her life… it means everything to me.”
