It was Jose’s moment to be in the spotlight.  Dozens of Macy’s employees, Make-A-Wish representatives and the media greeted him as he walked down the red carpet.  Just on the other side of red carpet is where his wish to go on a shopping spree will come true.  It’s all part of the 5th annual Macy’s National Believe Day, a day created to spread the season’s message of kindness and generosity toward others.  It’s a day when Make-A-Wish and Macy’s will grant more than 50 special wishes all across the U.S.

Jose, 15, suffers from osteosarcoma.  He said he wanted a shopping spree to buy some new clothes and accessories to help him feel more confident after his surgery.  He wasted no time in getting the shopping spree started – making his way to the young men’s section first.  He knew what he wanted and was quick to make decisions, especially on the choice of watch.  “Chemo brings you down a lot,” said Jose. “I just want to rebuild myself, starting with clothes.”

His mom watched as he tried on one jacket after another.  “He’s been through a lot emotionally.  He told me ‘mamma, if I can beat cancer, I can do anything’.”

National Believe Day is part of the Believe Campaign, Macy’s signature holiday program.  Over the past six years, the program has raised more than $6.5 million for Make-A-Wish. Kids of all ages can take part in the campaign by writing letters to Santa.  For every Santa letter dropped off at a Macy’s Santa mailbox from now until Christmas Eve, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million.

Watch Jose as he embarks on his shopping spree and learn more about his wish on KATU-TV (Channel 2) and KUNP-TV (Univision).
